Belonging: More Than Just Being Here

When I first walked into a Unitarian Universalist congregation years ago, I didn’t know if I would stay. I had been part of communities before where my welcome felt fragile, dependent on whether I fit in or kept parts of myself quiet. That morning, I sat in the back, ready to leave if it didn’t feel right.

But then something small happened: someone I had never met smiled at me with the kind of smile that says, I’m glad you’re here. Later, during coffee hour, another person asked my name and truly listened when I told them a little of my story. They didn’t rush to change the subject or look for someone else. In those moments, I felt something shift. This wasn’t just a place I could attend; it was a place where I could belong.

September at UUCV is a time of returning from summer travels, settling into new routines, and beginning again in community. It’s also a time to remember why we gather at all: to belong, and to help one another belong.

Belonging is more than simply being present in a space. It’s more than a name on a membership list, or a friendly greeting at the door. Belonging is the deep knowing that your story, your gifts, your struggles, your questions matter here. It’s the assurance that you are not just welcome, but needed.

In a world that can make belonging conditional based on appearance, beliefs, identity, or status, our Unitarian Universalist faith calls us to create spaces where belonging is unconditional. Where we do not have to shrink or hide parts of ourselves to be accepted. Where we make room for difference, knowing that diversity is not a problem to be solved, but a gift to be cherished.

Belonging is a practice. It’s something we nurture together through listening deeply, showing up for one another, holding each other accountable with love, and sharing both joys and burdens. It asks each of us not only to receive welcome, but also to extend it.

This month, I invite you to consider:

  • When have you felt most like you belonged?
  • What helps you offer that feeling to someone else?
  • How might UUCV deepen the practice of belonging for all those here now, and those we’ve yet to meet?

As we enter this new church year, may we keep building a community where belonging is not just a word we say, but a reality we live together.

In faith and love,
Rev. Phoenix Bell-Shelton Biggs

From your UUCV Board of Trustees

Hello UUCV Members and Friends,

The backpacks have been blessed and the days have gotten cooler, some of our young (and old) scholars are getting back into school rhythms as we begin a new church year. The board will be conducting our annual board retreat at Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC), to covenant together, set goals for the coming year and learn more about each other to facilitate our future ways of working together.

Please stay tuned for sanctuary upgrades to take the place of the current projector and to move some of the wires and trip hazards making our sanctuary more accessible and safer for all. Please also take time to make yourself familiar with the various committees, and teams here at UUCV. On Sept. 14th there will be a committee faire after the service if you want to learn more about these ways of offering time to support the mission and values of UUCV.

Updates from August board meeting:
  • Board voted on final committee structure
  • Board voted to approve use of bequest funds to upgrade sanctuary Audio/Visual equipment
  • Board member and youth representative started discussion of UUCV hosting a safer Discord server
The board of trustees is dedicated to furthering the mission and values of UUCV while optimizing financial well-being, growing membership, outreach and maintaining assets while offering transparency in our work. If you have questions or need to reach out please contact president@uucv.org for board related inquiries.

Worship this Month

Our September Worship
Theme is: Building Belonging

Belonging Starts with Being Who You Are.

Do you know who you are?

Are you young, full of wonder, full of energy?

Are you older, full of wonder, full of energy?

Are you young, low on wonder, depleted of energy?

Are you older, low on wonder, depleted of energy?

Are you a sister, sibling, or brother?  Are you a mother, father, or guardian?

Are you someone who worries? Are you someone who loves?

Are you a teacher, Doctor, nurse, or lawyer? Are you Christian, pagan, Buddhist, Muslim, atheist, or something else entirely?

Belonging Starts with Being Who You Are: Do you know who you are?

The truth is beloved; we are many things at once. Belonging Starts with Belonging

Belonging Starts with Being Who You Are.  - Rev. Phoenix

This Month, at the start of the 2025-2026 Church, we will explore what it means to belong in a way that is all of us scared, all of us loved, and all of us is wanted.  And how we ensure that we are creating a space of belonging for ourselves and others.

September 7 – Where the Waters Return ( Water Communion & Ingathering Service) Led by Rev. Phoenix Bell-Shelton Biggs with Worship Associates   Lynn Sodora  & Dianne Dusman

Each of us carries stories—of joy and sorrow, change and stillness, wandering and homecoming. As we gather for our annual Ingathering and Water Communion, we honor the beauty of these stories and the waters that hold them. Whether you’ve been away or nearby, weary or well, this is a time to return: to yourself, to your community, to what matters most.

In this multigenerational service of ritual, song, and reflection, we celebrate the sacred act of showing up again—with our full hearts, our honest selves, and a willingness to be transformed by love and connection.

Please bring a small amount of water to symbolize your summer, your journey, or what you hope to release or receive this season.

September 14 – Sacred Questions, Shared Journey
Led by Rev. Phoenix Bell-Shelton Biggs Worship Associate Dianne Dusman

As we begin this new chapter together, join us for a special interactive worship experience where curiosity becomes a spiritual practice and questions are welcomed as holy companions on the path. This service invites you to bring the questions that stir your heart—about theology, ministry, identity, vision, and more—and engage in a collective spiritual exploration. Live during worship Rev. Phoenix Bell-Shelton will be answering your questions; as many as they can get to that is.

September 21 – From Questions to Covenant
Led by Rev. Phoenix Bell-Shelton Biggs with Worship Associate Tara Sollman

Following our service of sacred questions, we now reflect on what it means to move from curiosity into commitment. As minister and congregation, how do we shape a shared life rooted in trust, care, and collective purpose?

We will begin naming the values we hold, the hopes we carry, and the sacred work of becoming a community—together.

September 28 - When The Venn Diagram Explodes

Led by Melissa Mattson and Max Donnelly

Intersectionality isn’t division, it’s our power. When we honor the whole person, our similarities unite us and our differences forge unbreakable bonds.

September 28 - The Quiet Librarian by Allen Eskens (Bev Motich leads)

Hana Babic is a quiet, middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend has been murdered, Hana knows that something evil has come for her, a dark remnant of the past she and her friend had shared. Thirty years before, Hana was someone else: Nura Divjak, a teenager growing up in the mountains of war-torn Bosnia—until Serbian soldiers arrived to slaughter her entire family before her eyes. 2025, 312 pp.

Changes coming to UUCV

Over the next couple of weeks you will notice some changes in the building.

New smoke detector/carbon monoxide detectors are being installed.  These detectors will also act as a Fire Alarm system....when one detector goes off...they all go off alerting everyone in the building of an issue. And, for any security issue in the building, an alarm can be activated....again, activating all the alarms indicating people should leave the building.

Large Screen TV's will be mounted in the Sanctuary making visibility better than the projector we currently use.  All will be wall mounted.  A TV will also be added to the Welcome Center for anyone that may need to leave the Sanctuary but still would like to be able to hear and see the service.

Do your Part to Maintain Fair Districting in our State!

Stand up for democracy by helping to get out the vote in this important upcoming election.  Use provided templates to add your own paragraph to convince infrequent voters to vote in November.  This matters because three liberal State Supreme Court Justices are up for retention.  The outcome of this election can affect gerrymandering in our state.  Currently those supporting fair districting hold the majority, but this election could change that.  Email Cheryl Parsons to obtain a pack of 20 letters. cherylhparsons@comcast.net

Volunteer to be part of UUCV's team to get involved in our community...Walk the Mile!
Walk a mile with us to raise funds for our local YWCA's support of women and girls experiencing violence. If you're able to donate the $30 entrance fee, GREAT! Or maybe you can ask friends to sponsor you.  OR just contact Pam in the office to let her know you're interested.  Deadline to register with our church office is September 8th! This isn’t just a walk. It’s a movement. A statement. A community-wide stand against sexual assault, violence against women and girls, and the silence that too often surrounds it. Every dollar raised helps provide crisis services, counseling services, medical and legal advocacy for victims and survivors in our county

Change for the World -

              July - September

CARES - Carlisle Community Cares provides emergency shelter, resources and support for individuals and families who are about to, or are experiencing homelessness.  One of these resources is the Penn Street "Day Center"

Despite all these and other efforts, the un-sheltered numbers keep rising in Cumberland County.  Housing, if available, is expensive.  There already is an overnight shelter in Shippensburg, but it is for families only.  To help remedy this problem, CARES has purchased a 6,100 sq. Ft. Empty building at 230 S. Garden Street in Carlisle across from GIANT.  Hopefully, starting in February, renovation will begin.  They also will start construction to add more spaces, bringing the total square footage to 9,100 sq. Ft.  Inside the building, partitions will be erected between each bed, creating some much-needed privacy.  Besides a bed, each compartment will have a nightstand and lamp.  This will temporarily provide about 40 - 50 adults (no children) with a warm, safe space to live, while working on their recovery.

All this will cost a lot of money, so any amount you can give for this renovation will be welcomed.

Religious Education

September 7: What does meaning & purpose look like in your life?
Do our lives have meaning and purpose? If so, where does that meaning and purpose come from? Are meaning and purpose something we choose or create ourselves or, as some philosophers and theologians would argue, can meaning and purpose only exist in relation to something that is eternal? Join us for an open discussion about what meaning and purpose look like in our lives.

September 21: Evolution of Life on Earth

October 5: Universalism
In this class, we explore the “Universalist” side of our Unitarian-Universalist tradition.
Discussion leader: Jeff Naughton

October 19: Forever Chemicals
Discussion leader: Dave Mooney

November 2: Creativity
For this class we will explore certain elements of creativity, how creativity shows up in our lives, and ways we might cultivate our own creativity. This class is open to all, regardless of how creative one thinks they are. Please bring your curiosity, self-compassion, and perhaps a willingness to play.
Discussion leader: Ryanne Mack

November 16: John Muir: Spirituality in Nature
John Muir passionately and evocatively inspires us to view nature as a spiritual place, where we can feel transcendence, peace and renewal. He helped create our national park system and modern preservation culture. Who was this John of the Mountains? And how do we experience our own spirituality in nature?
Discussion leader: Christine Carracino

United States.

Game Night for ALL Ages
Mozambique

Meet the Team on the Ground

The Bursary Committee couldn’t exist if we didn’t have a “team on the ground.” Our
local partners in Mozambique buy the supplies, pay the bills, and engage in countless other activities that enable the Bursary girls to successfully complete their educations.

Titos Macie, standing next to Dianne Dusman in the accompanying photo, is our Project Consultant. Titos is a bank president in the capital city of Maputo. He is involved in numerous charitable endeavors through the Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) and A Voice in the
Desert of Mozambique (AVODEMO). Titos handles our wire payments, serves as a translator, and visits the girls at the Molumbo and Namarroi Boarding Centers twice a year. The girls call him Father Titos and look forward to his visits. Sonia Assane Sauale, standing next to Susan Rimby, is our Project Director. Sonia lives in
Quelimane, the capital of Zambezia Province, where the Bursary Project is located. Sonia buys supplies and visits the girls four times a year. She is a graduate of the Bursary Project and an excellent role model for the girls who call her Mother Sonia.

Dianne Dusman and Susan Rimby saw Titos and Sonia in action during their monitoring
trip in 2023. They accompanied Titos and Sonia into Zambezia, a week-long journey, to
distribute supplies and meet with the stakeholders. Titos and Sonia talked with the Bursary girls about their life goals, shared study tips, and advised the girls to avoid distractions while they concentrated on their educations. Titos and Sonia complemented the parents on taking their daughters’ educations seriously, answered their questions, and listened seriously to their concerns. Titos and Sonia also took time to meet with the housemothers who manage the boarding centers, making sure they had what they needed and complementing their good work as well. When school principals and district administrators were available, Titos and Sonia met with them as well. The respect and affection the stakeholders had for Titos and Sonia was evident everywhere.

If you want to know more about “the team on the ground,” please come to the October
26 th Bursary Church Service and post-service luncheon. You’ll enjoy great food and fellowship, and learn more about the Bursary Project as well.

Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley Launch Community Art Gallery This Fall

New Seasonal Gallery to Feature Local Artists and Align with Worship Themes

Boiling Springs, PA — The Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley (UUCV) are proud to announce the launch of the UUCV Art Gallery, a new seasonal gallery space located inside the congregation’s fellowship hall. The gallery will open its first exhibit in September 2025, featuring local and regional artists whose work explores themes of belonging, compassion, and gratitude—inspired by UUCV’s fall worship series.

The UUCV Art Gallery will rotate exhibits every three months, intentionally aligning each collection with the church’s seasonal spiritual themes. Through this initiative, the congregation seeks to create a multisensory spiritual experience that nurtures beauty, connection, and reflection.

All featured artwork will be available for purchase, with a portion of each sale supporting UUCV’s ministries and the remaining proceeds going directly to the artist.

“This gallery is more than an art display—it’s a spiritual dialogue in color, texture, and form,” says Rev. Phoenix Bell-Shelton Biggs, UUCV’s minister.   “We believe creativity is sacred, and this is a way to bring beauty, imagination, and justice into our shared space.

The inaugural exhibit will run from September through November 2025, with an opening reception scheduled in early September. Featured themes include:

  • September –   Building Belonging

  • October –   Cultivating Compassion

  • November –   Nurturing Gratitude

UUCV invites artists of all ages and backgrounds to submit work that explores these themes. Submissions in a wide range of media are welcome, including painting, photography, fiber arts, sculpture, and mixed media. .

UUCV Staff Changes

It is with deep gratitude and tender hearts that we share news of two upcoming staff transitions in our UUCV community.

Carole Knisely, our talented and warm-hearted Music Director, has shared her plans to step down from her role following worship on Sunday, October 5, 2025. Carole has brought beauty, flexibility, and deep musical care to our services—from classical pieces to spirited sing-alongs, her leadership has been a gift to all of us. She leaves with both joy and mixed emotions, having thoroughly enjoyed her time among us and being grateful for the freedom, creativity, and connection she experienced here.

Carole recently accepted additional administrative and teaching responsibilities at HACC as the new head of their Music Business Program. While she is excited about this opportunity, the new role will require more of her time and focus. After discernment, she made the difficult decision to step back from her position at UUCV in order to embrace this next chapter in her professional life fully. She plans to continue freelance music work and has kindly offered to return for occasional music leadership in the future, if invited by our next Music Director.

Pam Martin, our beloved and long-serving Office Administrator, has also announced her upcoming retirement, with her last working day planned for December 15, 2025. After 13 years of devoted service, Pam is choosing to spend more time with her growing family, including two new granddaughters, and to enjoy the next chapter of life with her husband. Like Carole, Pam shared this decision with both joy and a lump in her throat. She has loved her time at UUCV deeply, describing this congregation as a family and reflecting with gratitude on the meaningful relationships and the sense of purpose she has found in her work.

Both Carole and Pam are leaving with hearts full of love for this community and with immense appreciation for the support, friendships, and spiritual connection they’ve found here. We will have opportunities in the coming months to celebrate them, honor their contributions, and send them into their next adventures with our blessings. We will soon be shareing thiere letters with the church as at large so you cab here it from them as well.

In the spirit of shared ministry, leadership is beginning careful planning for these transitions. As Head of Staff, I hold the responsibility and authority to hire staff directly, and I will be leading the search and discernment processes for both roles. While the final hiring decisions rest with me, there will be opportunities for meaningful input and involvement from the congregation, and I welcome your support as we move forward with care. Updates on timelines, job postings, and ways to participate will be shared soon.
