From the Board of Trustees |
Hello fellow UUCV’ers!
Fellow travelers through this complicated, rewarding, frustrating, beautiful and sometimes unattractive life. We are about to elect new leaders for this state and the country. For many, this is a particularly tense time. We hope the leaders elected have the best interests of this country, state and towns in their hearts and minds. Like anything else in life, there are no iron clad guarantees. Hopefully, all of us have done or will do their civic duty and vote. It does matter.
I have found myself, at times, listening too much to the various pundits and their professional views. This can really add to the existing tension in my own soul. To get away from that, I turn off the TV, radio, and computer, and focus on more immediate things like long walks with my dogs. Walking down trails and quiet sidewalks serves to ease the anxiety. I try to remind myself that we have never had a perfect politician in our 250 year history. All had their flaws to include racism, inflated egos, class consciousness, and too much power. Most made some successful policy decisions and most made decisions that didn't work out as well. Hopefully, the election will result in a group of leaders who are devoted to this country and support its democratic institutions. In the meantime, we have each other to support and rely on.
Jim Burton,
UUCV Board President

Focus on Finances
At the Town Hall Meeting in September the need to revise the budget for Fiscal Year 24/25 was mentioned. In November the Finance Committee (FC) will be reviewing our year to date finances on both the income and expense side. The FC does this every month, but in November we will have the income numbers from the Yard Sale and Auction, and an update on the status of pledges for the July-October portion of the year to consider along with the budget changes needed to reflect the Search Committee’s assessment that recruiting a minister will most likely not happen this Fiscal Year. With this information, the budget needs to be revised to include payment for the ministerial consultant services that Chris Kapp has been providing and has agreed to continue until our search is successful. There will also need to be some changes in the budget due to the UUA revamping their retirement plan and a change in Pam’s healthcare insurance expenses.
The FC will submit their budget revision recommendations to the Board of Trustees (BOT) who will then either vote to approve or make revisions and then vote to approve. This BOT approved final revision of the budget will then be presented to the congregation, most likely in a meeting to be scheduled for a Sunday in December. Please be on the lookout for an announcement about the meeting as your attendance is an important part of the process.
And a final thought for this month - I wonder if anyone actually reads this column and, if so, do you find helpful. I don’t mind writing this every month, but have gotten very little feedback about it. I would appreciate knowing if the information provided is helpful in your understanding of UUCV’s finances

Change for the World for October, November and December
Family Promise of Harrisburg Capital Region
About Family Promise:
Family Promise is a nonprofit organization serving homeless families to provide resources that enable families to move from homelessness to home. These resources include compassionate care, hospitality, professional support, lodging, meals, donated goods, and – most importantly – volunteers.
Family Promise’s shelter program relies on a partnership of interfaith congregations, civic organizations, and other volunteer groups to help families facing homelessness. Host sites provide lodging, meals, and hospitality to families in need. For families in the program, each day begins with breakfast available at the host site with volunteers, followed by a van ride to their Day Center. In the evening, guests return to the host site, where volunteers provide dinner and spend some quality time. The evening hours are for homework, relaxing, and family fun time, as they would be with any family. Each day begins with the family together, and ends with the family all together, under one roof.
Their programs also include Prevention from Homelessness and a Road to Success. For more details visit their website at www.familypromisehcr.org.

Please Consider when Donating to Food Pantries!
Now is the time of year when many folks make generous donations to local charities.
Most people buy what they think food pantry users want, but have never asked them. If you help families, single people, foster youth and the homeless, this list can help better tailor your donations! |
Some tips and guidance if you donate to food pantries derived from feedback by those who use them:
1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix, and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
18. Dish Soap / Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury, and women will cry over that.
20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
Also, please consider donating dog and cat food. Some people have hit a temporary low point and don’t want to give up their pets but find they have to choose to feed themselves or their pets. |

Rev. Joan Sabatino
It is with deep sadness that UUJusticePA shares news of the death of Reverend Joan Sabatino, Rev. Joan served as Minister of the First UU Church in Indiana, PA for over fifteen years. Upon retirement in July 2019, she took the position of UUJusticePA Director of Legislative Affairs and continued her lobby work via phone and virtual meetings with legislators. In July 2020, she became the Director of UUJusticePA and the UUtheVotePA Coordinator. |
She continued to juggle her many roles from her home in mid-town Harrisburg. Rev. Joan leaves UUJusticePA in good hands, having hired several new staff members in recent months. She died only a few weeks after being diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. She will be missed.
To honor Joan and her passion for the good fight, the UUJusticePA board members are encouraging our UU congregations throughout PA to hold events during Election week. These events will bring our communities together to honor, support, and reckon with the election process that is so important to our democracy. UUCV will hold two. Please bring a friend. If possible, reach out to other communities of faith to join you in holding events.
Now, more than ever, we must build coalitions because we’re all in this together. |

News from the Mozambique Bursary |
Molumbo Bursary Girls Reading a Letter from the UUCV Bursary Committee |
At this time of year, when we often count our blessings, I’m grateful for the free, public education that my grandchildren receive. Our oldest grandson, a first-year high school student attends classes in a well-constructed and furnished building. He takes a bus from his home to school and back again. His classes are reasonably sized, he learns a vigorous curriculum, and he has access to extra-curricular activities like band.
Children in Mozambique are not so fortunate. Only district capitals have secondary schools. Commuting over poor rural roads is not feasible, and the cost of living in the city is not affordable for most families. When families do have the funds, they send their sons. Rural daughters marry early, have many children, and live their lives in poverty.
The Mozambique Bursary Program changes the equation for rural girls in Zambezia province by providing the funds so they can attend high school in Molumbo or Namarroi. $445 (because of inflation) provides one girl with room and board, school uniforms and supplies, and hygiene materials for one year. That money also pays for security guards and house mothers. Lesser amounts can pay for a month’s worth of breakfast, 1-2 school uniforms, and a notebook and pen.
You can learn more about this life-changing social justice program at UUCV’s November 17th service and the Mozambiquan-style luncheon afterwards. Please join the Bursary Committee – Martha Bergsten, Dianne Dusman, Deb Genet, Brian McPherson, and Susan Rimby – for a thoughtful service and a good time afterwards.
